Lesson 12

Today's post is about the progress of my upcoming project. I am doing an advertisement for the Jaguar XJ. My advertisement is to promote this luxury car.

I drew out a few sketches to show my idea, this is what i had

This sketch after discussion was too simple in nature. Better designs can be made with the time i have for this project.

The other two sketches i had had more details and ideas. Decision was made that i should use elements of each sketch and come u with a new sketch that uses different ideas from the different sketches. This is what i had.

The new sketch improves on the old designs as there is more detail and i decided to include the front view of the car. Also there was no need for such a big copy. Still a lot of work to be done on my project in the coming weeks.

Lesson 11

Today we focused on typography. We learnt about its importance in design and how useful it can be to get a message across.

Here are some examples of good typography.

fig 3 - http://cdn.tripwiremagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/images/stories/Articles/inspiring-uses-of-typography/fingers.jpg

What these advertisements have in common is the appeal, although all of them use typography in a different way. The first one uses a creative method of using fruits to write out the message, the colours are also very bright and nice to attract attention, The second one uses a very strong type of writing to show a serious message yet there is also humour in it. The last one uses typography as art.

Here are some examples of bad typography

fig 4 - http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/236x/37/b5/49/37b5493da1ea0dfc4ad48fbcd2dd49f9.jpg

fig 5 - http://img.bhs4.com/bd/9/bd97197d4b01b54f58eb452f827e9c9a5da17e7e_large.jpg

These two pictures show bad typography as everything is squeezed together and there is no plan to it just making it look messy.

We also did a worksheet to learn the 8 fundamentals of typography

Tutorial 6 -

Worksheet- Typography

To be completed in class.

Question & Answer
What is Typography?
Typography is the technique of arranging text in order to make language used more appealing and interesting.

#1 - _The anatomy of a type face

Fill in the blanks below

#2 - Kerning
Provide one example each for No kerning and Kerning applied

#3 – Font communication
Why is Font selection important?
Fonts will give different messages and feelings to the text. ______________________________________________________

#4 - Alignment
Name the alignment
1 left

2 left
3 centered
4 centered

#5 - Secondary font
Why is Secondary Font important? It delivers the secondary message without conflicting the primary font and not to draw attention away from the primary font.
_____________________________________________________________

#6 – Size matters
Which set of typography is more effective? Why?

The second one because there is more emphasis on the main words to catch the attention of viewers. For example the word “WIN” is very big and viewers would see it and get interested compared to the first one that seems very monotonous. _________________________________________

#7 – typography as art

#8 – find inspiration

Find One Good and One Bad examples- Typography in Adverts
Tell us what’s good/bad.
And you think why so? Please provide visual!

Bad typography as emphasis is wrong and does not make sense.

Good typography as the message can be read and understood as the emphasis on the words are correct.

In conclusion typography is a very effective tool if used right, however if used wrongly, it can deter customers or viewers. Following the 8 fundamentals of typography can be a very good gauge if you are on the right track when using typography in an advertisement

Lesson 10

Today we did a second lesson on photoshop. Of course our first lesson was done through E-learning so today we had a more in depth and hands on experience of the tools in photoshop.

TASK 1.

For our first task we had to use a clipping mask to change the pattern of the man's suit. There were 3 layers, the background layer of the man, the layer of the suit, and the third layer of the pattern. We had to map the pattern given onto his suit. Creating the clipping mask mapped the pattern onto the jacket however it looked fake, and more of a cut out, this was solved by changing the layer mode.

Before

After clipping

After mode change

TASK 2.

Next we used layers masks. We were given a picture of Shakira and had to create a focus on her and not the background. To achieve this we had to duplicate he layer and apply gaussian blur. So the blur layer was now covering the clear layer below. Using layer mask and a soft brush, painting over Shakira in black revealed the clear layer behind. Here is the before and after.

Before

After

TASK 3.

Next we used the healing tool. We were given a picture of the woman and had to remove the moles on her face and the freckles. What we had to do was using the healing brush tool, hold down the option key and select clear skin near to the pole then use that sample to cover it up.

Before

After

TASK 4.

Next we were given an expressionless man and had to use the liquify tool to make him look happier. The hard part was to make it look natural. To do this, i had to move each part little by little and make small amendments instead of drastic changes.

Before

After

TASK 5

Next we moved on to patching and cloning. We were given 2 pictures, one in which we had to clone her eyeball and one to do patching. We started off with the cloning. By using clone stamp we cloned a woman's eyeball. Then we did patching to a woman's eyes to remove crows feet.

Before cloning

After cloning

Before patching

After patching

TASK 6

Next we moved on to colour change. We were given a purple building and we had to change the colour of it. Under colour replacement, all that needs to be done was to elect the colour  of the building that we wanted to change and select a different colour.

Before

After

TASK 7

Next we had a picture of a clear blue sky, and using colour range, had to change it to a preset picture we had. Similar to the previous task, we had to select the area to change. After selecting the area, we deleted it to reveal the background of the clouds. However this worked for this picture very well as only the sky was blue, if other areas were blue, it would have been deleted as well.

Before

After

TASK 8

Lastly, we had to use colour replacement tool to change the colour of the woman's blouse. We had to manually paint the colour onto her blouse.

Before

After

After completing all the tasks, we had one last project to put our skills to the test, we had to create a motivational poster using what we have learnt from photoshop.

Start

End

In conclusion today's lesson was enjoyable as we learnt some new tools and did some interesting things with the software. Some difficulties were face but we overcame it and manage to achieve what we set out to do.

Lesson 9

Lesson 9 today which means our project is getting closer and closer. We went more in depth about one design fundamental we learnt previously and that was layout.

Four basic elements have to be in a print advertisement. They are visual, headline, body copy and logo. These elements should be put together in a simple way to convey its message clearly and achieve its goals.

For example the nike shoe advertisement below has all four elements and are put together very well.

fig 1 - http://www.pinoyfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/nike-ad-blog.png

Symmetric and asymmetric designs were also shown. The first design is symmetrical while the second one is asymmetric.

fig 3 - http://s.ecrater.com/stores/146213/4b7e069e5fe0f_146213n.jpg

We also recapped contrast. For example using contrasting colours.

fig 4 - http://cmrolf72.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/contrast.jpg

We then moved to some advanced strategies in design. The golden rectangle was introduced to us. What the golden rectangle is saying is try to put the main message or visual as the focal point and allow the design to have a flow like the advertisement below.

fig 5 - http://www.graphicsbeam.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Listerine-ad-1-520x724.jpg

An advertisement should also be exciting and stand out. This can be done with colours

fig 6 - http://img.uuhy.com/uploads/2010/08/394-advertising.jpg

Lastly we covered photo design strategies. Photos used should have a central point of interest that link together to deliver its message. Lighting and background is vital to get desired the desired outcome. The advertisement below is an example of good photo design.

fig 7 - http://www.indiaonrent.com/forwards/b/best-ads-save-water-save-life/res/9x03pq.jpg

In conclusion, layout is vital in design and we have been told about this since day one, we learn a few more strategies to get a better layout for our design when it is time for our project.

Lesson 8

Lesson 8, a very interesting lesson because today, our lesson was done through e-learning. The lesson was done online. Since the start of our Essentials of Graphic Design journey, the software we have been using for designing was Adobe Illustrator but this time, we were taught on how to use Adobe Photoshop through videos and simple hands on tasks to give us a bit of experience with Photoshop.

We started off watching videos about Photoshop, just the basic introduction introducing the toolbar, option bar, tools and palettes. A few more videos followed showing some very useful tools such as the history palette for example.

Then the tasks came, the first task was to fuse two layers together using layer opacity and blend mode. We had to blend godzilla with a background of Marina Bay Sands. The problem was that at first i tried to use the opacity tool solely and trued to put the pictures together, this did not work well so i explored a few of the options from the blending mode and it came out much better.

Next, we learnt about the marquee and lasso tool, we were given a picture of a tyre, and had to select the rim of the tyre and make it cover the tyre. Easier said than done as i took awhile to select the rim but after few tries i got it.

Still using the same selection, this type we had to select the two men using the magic wand and lasso tool.

Next we had to use the quick selection tool to select a woman from the picture, this was fairly simple as her outline was easily distinguished from the background and hence we could use the quick selection tool.

Still using selection, this time we had a more complex shape and had to use the pen tool to select. Slowly plotting points throughout.

Lastly, we had to use the scaling tool. We had a simple picture of a family to rescale. However we were supposed to scale the background without scaling the people in the photo.

In conclusion today was a ver different lesson in EGD as it was e-learning and we used a new software, Adobe Photoshop. It has similar tools to Adobe Illustrator as well as many new tools that are not found in illustrator. It is a very useful software that I am sure i will have to use in EGD.
