Lesson 8

Lesson 8, a very interesting lesson because today, our lesson was done through e-learning. The lesson was done online. Since the start of our Essentials of Graphic Design journey, the software we have been using for designing was Adobe Illustrator but this time, we were taught on how to use Adobe Photoshop through videos and simple hands on tasks to give us a bit of experience with Photoshop.

We started off watching videos about Photoshop, just the basic introduction introducing the toolbar, option bar, tools and palettes. A few more videos followed showing some very useful tools such as the history palette for example.

Then the tasks came, the first task was to fuse two layers together using layer opacity and blend mode. We had to blend godzilla with a background of Marina Bay Sands. The problem was that at first i tried to use the opacity tool solely and trued to put the pictures together, this did not work well so i explored a few of the options from the blending mode and it came out much better.

Next, we learnt about the marquee and lasso tool, we were given a picture of a tyre, and had to select the rim of the tyre and make it cover the tyre. Easier said than done as i took awhile to select the rim but after few tries i got it.

Still using the same selection, this type we had to select the two men using the magic wand and lasso tool.

Next we had to use the quick selection tool to select a woman from the picture, this was fairly simple as her outline was easily distinguished from the background and hence we could use the quick selection tool.

Still using selection, this time we had a more complex shape and had to use the pen tool to select. Slowly plotting points throughout.

Lastly, we had to use the scaling tool. We had a simple picture of a family to rescale. However we were supposed to scale the background without scaling the people in the photo.

In conclusion today was a ver different lesson in EGD as it was e-learning and we used a new software, Adobe Photoshop. It has similar tools to Adobe Illustrator as well as many new tools that are not found in illustrator. It is a very useful software that I am sure i will have to use in EGD.
